「Travel」の語源、ご存じですか？
さて、その「旅行する」という言葉、英語ではtravel,と表しますが、そもそもなぜtravel,というのか・・
気になったので早速語源を調べてみました！

意味は苦難、辛苦など苦しいという意味。現代英語でもtravailは陣痛（生みの苦しみ、の意味）

Guatemala,Honduras and El Salvador.
After one particularly grueling bus ride,
we arrived around midnight in a tiny
village in Honduras.
Some of the townspeople came to the bus
to offer us lodging or food. My friend
and I didn’t speak Spanish.

Suddenly we heard some Chinese-accented English. We looked and saw a young woman
who then led us to her restaurant where we ate and spoke to her and her family for a few
hours. In the center of the Sierra del Merendon, in the tiniest of cobblestone towns, we
relaxed and made connections through English.

abroad has been dropping, year-on-year,
for some time now. After a short jump in
2004, we have seen a slow but steady
decrease.
However, this information doesn’t give
the whole story. Though it is true that
less Japanese people are traveling to
Hawaii, the Mainland USA, and Australia,
there have been increases in other areas.

2010), there has been a great increase in visits to China, Vietnam, Hong Kong, and Taiwan.
Outside of Asia, the strongest growth has been in visits to Canada, and European countries
such as the Spain, Switzerland, Hungary, and the Czech Republic.
Therefore, rather than “not traveling”, the trend has been for Japanese people to expand
the range of possible destinations. Japanese travelers seem to be breaking away from the
relative safety of traditional Hawaii or California trips, to more exotic and more varied
locations. Though Japanese travelers go outside of the “English World” they discover that
one thing remains constant: the language of transactions, of information, and of
communication across these various countries and regions is English, or rather, “englishes”.
As Japanese travelers become even more confident speaking “Your english”,
certainly there will be even more exotic and “off the beaten track” travel destinations.
Likely, many will discover their own “english in the Foreign Night” story, like my own.
