Living in Tokyo, we are most often confronted with the modernity and high pace of city life.
Around us we see giant televisions bleating out advertising, trucks and cars rumbling through the twisting streets, announcements on trains, at crosswalks, at every shop, the familiar and reassuring welcome calls from shop keepers and, more than anything, the endless rushing of people, people and more people. At times, this can be an erratic and stressful mix.
Even surrounded by people, we can lose the close connections to each other and though we are human, we lose our humanity.
Fortunately, there are ways to overcome and reset our minds: Tea Ceremony.

The Tea Ceremony portion of Hobby English is an extremely popular and elegant class. On Friday evening, many students joined with our Tea Ceremony teacher, Ms. Kazuko Oda, to learn both how to appreciate Tea Ceremony and, also, how to perform and explain Tea Ceremony in English. With a theme of “tranquility in a special place”, the students learned about the process and meaning behind the Tea Ceremony. Oda-sensei, as always, emphasized that the word “ceremony” can make people feel tense or uptight. Rather than a“ceremony”, she stated that the best way to think is in a way of “courtesy” and that, really, the main idea is to enjoy tea and sweets with nice conversation, amid a theme.
The students ate seasonal Japanese sweets and both drank and ate tea. While serving tea to other students, they learned and used the phrases and vocabulary that could express the sentiment of polite courtesy. Some students were ready in kimono, while others wore their normal clothes. As Oda-sensei encouraged and explained, all are welcome as long as the spirit of
「和敬静寂」(わけいせいじゃく) is felt.

茶の心 和敬静寂

“和” Harmony understanding the theme, understanding the personalities of the other members
“敬” Respect respecting the tools, water, tea, sweets, the process, and the guests
“静” Purity simplifying thinking and looking at things as “they are”
“寂” Tranquility getting the level of quietness of movement and feeling of peace
Through the class, the students enjoyed not only making and drinking tea, not only learning
the English to help them do so, but also, relearning some key aspects of Japanese history,
culture and art. The next Tea Ceremony session is in June. Join us and re-collect yourself in
English and Elegance.
