St. Patrick’s Day is a celebration of all things Irish.
Originally, it began as a day to celebrate the life of
St. Patrick, who, among other things, chased all of
the snakes out of Ireland.

St. Patrick is the patron saint of Ireland. In much of Europe various “Saint’s Days” are
celebrated, to remember the patron saint of that country. On this day in Ireland, there are
parades and music celebrations and it is a national holiday.
During the “Great Potato Famine” (1845 – 1852), many Irish people emigrated to Canada, the
USA, Australia, and New Zealand. These people brought St. Patrick’s Day with them to their
new countries. In the new countries, the celebrations became even bigger. The most famous
St. Patrick’s Day celebration is Boston which was started in 1737. There, they have a giant
parade, tons of Irish music, and everything has a hint of green. Other big celebrations are in
New York, Montreal, Toronto, Sydney, and Chicago (where they dye the Chicago River green!).
Though originally celebrated by Irish immigrants, and people with partial Irish heritage (like
myself – 25%), it is now celebrated by people of any background and, on that one spring day,
anyone and everyone is Irish. Everyone can wear the green colors of the Irish islands!

“Great Potato Famine”--- ジャガイモ大飢饉（1845～1849年）ジャガイモの疫病がヨーロッパに蔓延。ジャガイモを主食にしていたアイルランドで多くの死者が出た。アイルランド人口の20～25％が失われたとされ、且つ政府の対応も悪く、結果、海外への移住者が急増した。

in Harajuku and Omotesando). Better yet, at any Irish Pub
(and I think there are about 1,000,000 of them…) you too
can join into this Gaelic explosion! So, if your name is
Shimizu, you can be McShimizu, if you are Morita, you can
be O’Morita. This Wednesday, March 17th, get your green
shirt, green hat, green sweater, or green necktie and head
out to an Irish Pub to have some green beer!

clover. In Christianity there is a doctrine of “The Holy
Trinity”. To put it VERY simply, Christianity teaches that
God, Jesus Christ, and The Holy Spirit are all individual,
yet all the same. It can be a confusing idea. St. Patrick
used the three leaves of the shamrock to represent
The Holy Trinity. There are three petals, but they make one
clover.
Therefore, like the Holy Trinity, it is both “3” and “1”.

聖パトリックは３つの葉からなる『シャムロック』は、キリスト教の中心的教義である「三位一体」を表している＿ と説明し、キリスト教の布教に利用しました。どこにでも生えていて、常に人々が目にする事ができるこの『三つ葉のクローバー』を使用したことは、布教にかなり効果的であったと想像できます。そして遂に、このプラントはアイルランドのシンボルとなったのですね。
