こんにちは。Weのマイルスです。皆さんは、日本の夏祭りのように、イギリスにも同じような花火のお祭りがあるのをご存知ですか？
この花火祭りは、毎年11月5日のハロウィンの時期に行われますが、イギリスではハロウィンよりもこの「Guy Fawkes Day[Night]（ガイ・フォークス・デー）」が盛んです。この「ガイ・フォークス・ナイト」は「ボーンファイヤー」という名前でも呼ばれ、火薬陰謀事件の失敗を祝う花火を使用したイベントです。

1605年、ガイ･フォークスによって集められたグループは火薬陰謀事件を計画していました。事件の目的は当時のイギリス王ジェームス1世の爆殺で、王が国会にいるときを狙っての犯行でした。しかし、計画実行前に密告により事件は明るみになり、ガイ･フォークスら陰謀者たちは捕らわれた後、処刑され、計画は失敗に終わりました。
The Gunpowder Plot of 1605 was organised by a group of people led by（率いられる） a
man called Guy Fawkes. Their aim（目的） was to kill the king of England, James the First, by blowing up（爆破する） the Houses of Parliament (the famous building in London along
the river Thames) whilst（…の間＝while） the king was inside. They secretly placed
gunpowder beneath the Houses of Parliament（国会）, but on November the first the king
received a tip off（内報） about the plot. The houses of parliament were searched and the gunpowder was found being guarded by Guy Fawkes. Fawkes and the other plotters（陰謀者） were famously hung, drawn and quartered (a form of execution).

行事では、花火や大かがり火が焚かれ、子供達はガイ・フォークスの人形を作り、「”a penny for the Guy” =「ガイ人形に１ペニー頂戴」と言いながら、花火を買うためのお小遣いをもらう風習があります。そして最終的に、かがり火でガイ人形を焼き払います。

The festivities include firework displays (unfortunately not nearly as impressive as the firework displays in Japan), and the building of bonfires（大かがり火）. In the lead up to Guy

このお祭りは子供達、特に男の子達に大人気です。花火やかがり火はもちろん、おそらく恐ろしい歴史やぞっとするような内容が男の子達を惹き付けるのだと思います。子供の頃はガイ･フォークス・デーが楽しみで、数日前から天気予報のチェックは欠かしませんでした。当日の夜は友人と一緒に花火のベストスポットである教区のサッカー場に行き、ホットドックを食べながら花火を見て、僕らのガイ人形を燃やしたりと、非常に楽しかったのを覚えています。
Guy Fawkes Night is very popular with children, especially with boys. I think in addition to（…に加えて） the fireworks and bonfires, boys enjoy the grisly（恐ろしい） history behind Guy Fawkes Night. And although the description of Guy Fawkes Night I’ve given sounds a
little gruesome（ぞっとするような）, and has uncanny（不可解な） similarities with the
movie “The Wicker Man” it is indeed(実に) a lot of fun! I remember when I was a boy,
every year for a few days before November the fifth we would check the weather forecast（天気予報）, praying that it wouldn’t be too wet or windy and therefore canceled.
On the night my friends and I would go to my local parish（教区） football club where they had the best firework displays, eat hotdogs, watch the fireworks and burn our ‘Guys’.

世界には日本人のあまり馴染みのない面白いお祭りがたくさんあります。Weでは様々な国からやってきた講師が授業を行っておりますので、多種多様な文化も一緒に学んでいただけます。
また、余談ではありますが、英語で「男」や「奴」を表す”Guy”って言葉、実はこの「ガイ・フォークス」が由来なんですよ。
